Wow. Just wow.

I have been informed of some less than savory happenings within SCDG. Apparently, some of the prominent members have been basically fired with no reason given as to why. The people who have been informed that they will not be returning for the 2011 season were good athletes, well loved by their teams with no disciplinary issues whatsoever. There are several women on the league which are less well liked, less talented skaters and have been actively ejected from games for insubordination and/or fighting. This is unacceptable. The ladies who will not be returning are strong and intelligent women who have been known to disagree with the president of the league.
I have decided not to go back for the second tryout with this league, and fear that they will be losing their WFTDA status very soon. I have decided to join the recreational league in our area for now, and will possibly consider the other nearby WFTDA leagues later on. Maybe Wasatch Roller Derby.
What a long strange trip it's been.

  1. we have sooo much in common it's spooky sometimes! you're braver then me for blogging about it... I'm far too unsettled with what's happening over here on my end. Are you on facebook? I can be found as CerebrawlVortex there.

stay drama free! I'm trying.... daily it seems!

  2. I haven't got many fears about blogging this drama. I am certain that WFTDA is going to be brought into this situation, as at least three members of SCDG have told me that they plan to lodge complaints. These are NOT the girls that were asked not to return either. I love some of the ladies in this league and it is tearing my heart out to watch this, even from the sidelines. I was planning to join up as a ref if I failed the second round tryouts. I have been NSO for months. The whole thing is sad. I think I'm headed over to the recreational league for next season then I will consider whether or not I feel I am advanced enough to tryout with WRD. Sigh. Derby = drama lately.

  3. Sorry to hear that! I hope you find a drama free league!! See, it's better that you didn't make it in tryouts the first time. You dodged a bullet!
As for me, I just skated my first fresh meat practice tonight with the Philly Rollergirls and they are amazing. One of the things that I really respect about them is their policy on drama - namely, that it's not tolerated. It comforts me when I hear sad stories like yours.

  4. I mostly just hate seeing my mentors hurt so badly. In hind sight, it looks a lot like either I was offered a chance to take my skates and run or I was deliberately kept out based on my friendships. I am close friends with one of the ladies and a known admirer of another of the ladies that was asked not to return (names are withheld because it's not my place to out them) I think that played a role. I don't think I would have stood a chance if I had returned for the second tryout. I also think I will be avoiding WRD for the time being. Red Rockettes, here I come!

  5. I am listening to Derby Deeds podcast number 32 and right around 27 minutes in, they start talking about this issue! Mostly because of some fb page that was created and subsequently deleted. Just thought you'd be interested to listen to that episode since you sort of lived through it. But I am glad you found a league to skate with!

  6. I have that episode downloaded, but haven't been able to listen yet. It is always interesting to see an outside viewpoint on what's going on. I keep getting more and more information that makes me realize what a bullet I dodged by failing tryouts.

  7. By SCDG do you mean Salt City? What the HELL is going on over there?!

And yeah, maybe it's better not to be a part of that just now...

(sorry if this double-posts, I'm having technical difficulties!)

  8. Yes, Salt City. Insanity. That's what it boils down to. The Owner/President of Salt City decided to rid herself of a few ladies she considered "problems" basically prompting a mass exodus of most of the serious athletes leaving the ladies who are more about badassery then athleticism. There's more to it, but I'm trying to be fair since I can't get the people who stayed in the league to talk to me except the Freshies that I would have been training with. I only get some of the story. I am happy where I am now, and can't wait for the first practice of our new session on Thursday!
